My Design Process

I have learned that good design is an iterative process. It requires collaboration with multiple teams, stakeholders, and, most importantly, the end-users. User-centered design is the key to success. It is easy for most people to become attached to initial design solutions, but it is important to remember that user validation should dictate the direction of your design decisions. Forgoing research and testing introduces a ton of unnecessary risk and rarely leads to an effective solution that users love.  It is important to remember that the design solutions created in the early stages may not solve the entire problem because the depth of knowledge about the problem typically requires continuous feedback from users. It is important to gain an intimate knowledge of the user’s processes and needs by asking the five W’s ( Who, What, Where, When, and Why) before attempting to solutionize the How.

Let’s remember that UX means User Experience, and as a UX designer, we want to create solutions that are both intuitive and enjoyable. Great designs require a designer that is eager to gain in-depth knowledge of users, their environment, mindset, pain points, and their goals. As designers, it is our job to advocate for our user’s needs. We do this by conducting research, talking to users, getting continuous feedback, testing prototypes, and collaborating with different teams. User validation helps keep projects on track and ensures our team that we are building the most effective solution.

I believe that successful design projects stem from a balanced team that utilizes effective communication and keeping the end-user as the central focus.

Incorporating UCD and Agile methodologies will help reduce risk over time. By creating a short feedback cycle with the users of the product, it enables the team to validate any assumptions and ensures that the project is on the path to success. This methodology ensures that you are building a product that solves real problems and that users enjoy using in their workflows.

Waterfall methodologies build risk over time because they are not validating with their user base.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO PUT USERS AT THE CENTER OF THE DESIGN PROCESS?
